Ex-Loyola Coach Dies
New Orleans, Jan 14 [Special] - Thomas J. Haggerty, 51, former basketball coach and athletic director at DePaul and Loyola universities in Chicago, died here tonight. He had been hospitalized with pneumonia for several days.
Haggerty, signed as DePaul's basketball coach in 1937, was instrumental in originating the college double header programs now played in Chicago Stadium.
He entered the army in 1940 as a captain and, after a medical discharge in 1944, returned to DePaul as athletic director.
Loyola of Chicago signed Haggerty as basketball coach in 1945. His 1948-49 Loyola quintet, winner of 25 of 31 games, finished second in the National Invitation tournament after a startling upset of Kentucky.
Haggerty resigned from the Chicago school in 1950, then signed to coach Loyola of New Orleans for five years, but left that job in January, 1954, because of failing health.
FUNERAL in CHICAGO
Funeral services for Thomas J. Haggerty will be in Chicago, with requiem mass in St. Clement's church, probably Thursday. The remains will be at the funeral home at 5438 S. Halstead St. Survivors are two brothers, Richard of Chicago, and John of Miami, and a sister, Mrs. Howard Sammon of River Forest.
