Ex-Vandy Coach Cooper Dies
Norman T. Cooper, assistant football coach at Vanderbilt in the 1940s and the Commodores' head basketball coach in 1942, '43 and '47, died over the holidays in Birmingham, Ala. He was 81.
Cooper, who died on Dec. 26, was line coach at Vanderbilt during the Red Sanders era and helped develop several outstanding Commodore linemen. Cooper doubled as basketball coach fro three seasons and his teams compiled a record of 24-25.
Cooper was an All-America football player at Howard College (now Samford) in 1936 and member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. After coaching at Vanderbilt, Kansas and LSU, he began his own investment business in Birmingham.
