Ex-Xavier Basketball Coach Dies
CINCINNATI (AP) - Services were scheduled today for Lewis R. "Lew" Hirt, who coached the Xavier University basketball team to a 78-59 record between 1947 and 1951.
Hirt, 75, died at Glen Ellyn Ill., Tuesday. He will be buried in Greencastle, Ind.
Hirt, a graduate of DePauw University, coached football and basketball at Hamilton Ohio, High School, starting in 1930 and his 1938 undefeated basketball team won the state high school championship. He coached baseball at Hamilton Catholic High before moving to Xavier in 1947 where his teams faced the most prominent in the country.
His first Xavier team went 28-4 and with victories over Purdue, Seton Hall, Vanderbilt, Miami of Ohio, Dayton and Cincinnati.
Hirt then taught science until his retirement at Cincinnati Withrow High School until his retirement.
