Jim Snyder Dies at 76; Ohio Coach for 25 Years
PALATINE, Ill.: Jim Snyder, head basketball coach at Ohio University for 25 years, died of cancer Wednesday. He was 76.
Snyder compiled a 355-244 record at Ohio, and his teams won seven Mid-American Conference championships.
He won more games than any other coach at the University and is second in the MAC to former Toledo coach Bob Nichols in total victories.
One of his biggest triumphs came in 1964, when the Bobcats defeated Kentucky 85-69 in the NCAA Mideast Regional semifinals. Ohio fell 69-57 to Michigan in the regional championship.
Snyder played football for the Bobcats, and scored the game's only touchdown in a 6-0 victory at Illinois in 1938.
He also starred on the Ohio basketball team that lost to CCNY in the 1941 NIT final.
Snyder coached two years at the former Canton Lehman High School, but returned to Ohio in 1946 as an assistant football and basketball coach.
He was head basketball coach from 1949-74, and remained a football assistant until 1958.
He is survived by his wife, Gayle Crites Snyder; a daughter, Pamel Nelson of Bermidji, Minn.; two sons, J. Todd of Palatine and Kim of Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Lois Snyder of Canton, and 13 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Reed Funeral Home in Canton. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery.
