HAROLD B. "COOKIE" CUNNINGHAM, 90, 9906 Rosemary Lane, Leesburg, died Friday, Nov. 3.
Mr. Cunningham was a retired owner of a laundromat. He also played for professional football teams from 1926 to 1931, including the Chicago Bears, and played professional basketball for the Toledo Redmen from 1926 to 1931.
Born in Mount Vernon, Ohio, he moved to Leesburg in 1974. A member of First United Methodist Church of Tavares, he also belonged to the National Football League Alumni Association, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Varsity "O" of Ohio State University, American Legion and the Masonic Lodge Acacia of Grand Forks, N.D. GENERALS' QUINT GETS NEW COACH
Lexington, Oct. 31 - (AP) - Harold B. Cunningham, former Ohio State university basketball and football star, was named basketball coach at Washington and Lee today to succeed Harry K. (Cy) Young, who resigned to become W. and L.'s full-time alumni secretary.
Richard A. Smith, W. and L. athletic director, announced the appointment after approval of a one-year contract by the university's recently formed joint committee on athletics. Cunningham will report immediately.
He is a former football star and was an all-conference basketball man at Ohio State. He played center on Ohio's quintet for three years and was rated third in scoring during that time. Ohio State had a championship team, it was recalled here, during the 1923-24 season when Cunningham was playing.
The new W. and L. coach played varsity football three years and captained the team in 1925. He was selected as an all-conference end.
After graduating from Ohio State in 1926 with the bachelor of science degree in business administration, he played professional football with the Chicago Bears, New York, and Cleveland.
He played professional basketball three years with the New York Celtics and then played with a Cleveland professional team.
In 1936 Cunningham returned to Ohio State to serve three years as assistant basketball and football coach and also to do graduate work. Last year he was head football coach at Baylor school. ...
