UNC Administrator, Coach Dies at 78
CHAPEL HILL (AP) - Dr. George Edward "Bo" Shepard, a longtime faculty member, administrator and coach at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, died Sunday. He was 78.
Shepard, who joined the school in 1929 as assistant graduate manager of athletics and worked for the university until his 1970 retirement, coached the Tar Heels' basketball team from 1932 to 1936, winning the Southern Conference championship with a 23-2 record in 1935.
He was the senior author of the textbook, "Interscholastic Athletics," published in 1953.
Shepard was president and vice president of the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and also in the College Physical Education Association and Phi Delta Kappa professional education fraternity.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill. Burial will be in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery.
