J. Craig Ruby Dies; Missouri, Illinois Coach
KANSAS CITY (AP) - J. Craig Ruby, who coached basketball teams at Missouri and Illinois in the 1920s and 1930s, died Monday at 84. Burial will be tomorrow.
Ruby coach the University of Missouri basketball team from 1920 to 1922 and later coached at the University of Illinois from 1922-36. He played basketball at Columbia.
He was elected to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1975 and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He was former president of the National Basketball Coaches Association and was chosen to be on the Helms Athletic Foundation All-American basketball team.
Ruby, who lived in Lenexa, Kan., was personnel manager for Hallmark Cards Inc. from 1937-46 and later operated gift shops in the Kansas City area.
Surviving are his widow, Dorothy; a son, and a daughter.
