Ex-Baylor Coach Dies
WACO, Texas - R.E. "Mr. Bill" Henderson, who coached the Baylor Bears from the late 1940s to the early 1960s, died Thursday of a lengthy illness at a nursing home. He was 78.
Henderson joined the Baylor staff in 1936 as an assistant in both football and basketball and was named head basketball coach in 1942. From 1942 to 1961 he coached the Bears to an overall 301-233 record.
Henderson retired from coaching in 1961 but returned to serve as athletic director at Baylor from 1969 to 1971. In 1960 he was president of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and later was installed in the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
In his years as head coach, Henderson's team collected four Southwest Conference titles and in 1948 made it into the final four at the NCAA tournament.
