Walter N. Clemons
Walter N. "Ben" Clemons, 78, 1518 Atapha Nene, died Thursday at his home.
Graveside services are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. today at Oakland Cemetery. The family requests no flowers.
In his earlier years, Clemons played end for the University of Florida football team. He and Rainey Cawthon, a teammate from Tallahasee, were inducated into the University of Florida Athletic Hall of Fame this past spring.
"He was a great athlete," Cawthorn said of his friend. "He wasn't a showoff like I was, but he was a great athlete."
"Ben didn't have any enemies. He really didn't."
A native and lifelong resident of Havana, he was a retired resident of Havana, he was a retired assistant director for the state Department of Business and Professional Regulation and an athletic coach at the University of Florida, Stetson and Citadel Universities. He was inducted into the University of Florida Hall of Fame in April of 1984 and the Leon High School Hall of Fame in 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Olmstead Clemons of Tallahassee; a sister, Rebecca C. Dover of Havana; a niece, Karol D. Selvagio of Tallahassee; two nephews, Walter D. Dover and Henry B. Dover, both of Havana.
Culley and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
