Obituary - Associated Press (April 2, 1985)
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Al Severance, basketball coach at Villanova University for 25 years until he retired after the 1960-61 season, died Monday in Lexington, where he had traveled to see the Wildcats play in the NCAA basketball tournament Final Four. He was 80.
Severance, who took Villanova to its first NCAA tournament in 1939, died of a heart attack in his hotel room, authorities said.
Severance, once a magistrate in Tredyffrin Township, posted a 416-198 at Villanova, which he had attended as a student.
He took four teams to NCAA tournaments and two to the National Invitation Tournament in New York. He was a member of the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame, a prestigious honor in basketball.
He made Villanova's varsity basketball team as a freshman in 1925. He also ran the 880-yard dash on the track team and was a member of the boxing team.
He was valedictorian of the graduating class of 1929 and went on to earn his law degree at Temple University in 1935.
While attending Temple, he was graduate manager of athletics and freshman basketball coach at Villanova. He later served as athletic director.
His son, David, said a Mass was planned in the chapel at Villanova at 11 a.m. next Monday.
Severance is survived by two sons, David and John.
