Obituary - Oliver L. Steele, 79, dies; was farmer, horse breeder, Lexington Herald-Leader (March 17, 1986)
Steele, a native of Fayette County, was a graduate of Lexington High School and the University of Kentucky. While in high school, he played basketball, football, tennis and ran track. In college, however, he limited himself to two sports - basketball and tennis. While at UK he won several tennis tournaments, including the state tennis championships from 1924 to 1926.
During the 1930s, Steele opened the Lafayette Garage on Main Street, which he operated for about 10 years. He later joined Hinkle Contracting Corp. in the management division and remained there until his retirement in 1970.
Before and after his retirement, Steele owned Woodland Farm in Bourbon County and bred thoroughbreds.
Steele, who lived at 490 Harp-Innis Road, was a member of the Kenneland Club and Sigma Chi fraternity Chapter M.
He is survived by a son, O. Lee Steele of Lexington; a daughter, Virginia Harvey of Lexington; and a brother, Hal Steele of Lexington.
