Obituary - E.C. Knadler, Student, Dies, Lexington Leader (November 30, 1927)
Mr. Knadler was taken to his home a week ago Tuesday suffering with influenza. Pneumonia developed causing hemorrhages which caused his death, according to his physician.
While at the University Mr. Knadler played freshman foot ball, base ball and basket ball and was a member of the varsity foot ball and basket ball squads.
Mr. Knadler was also recognized as an outstanding student in the College of Commerce and was a member of Delta Sigma Pi, professional commerce fraternity, an honor awarded only to the best students in the commerce college. He was also a member of Keys, fraternity for outstanding men in the sophomore class, and of Alpha Tau Omega, social fraternity.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home in Louisville. Members of the A.T.O. fraternity will go to Louisville tonight to attend the funeral and a number of them will act as pall bearers.
Mr. Knadler was one of the veterans Coach Johnny Mauer relied on this year for the basket ball team. He was a forward and one of the best shots and floor men ever to perform for the Blue and White. He reported for basket ball practice several weeks ago, but about a week ago he was taken seriously ill and had to return to his home at Louisville.
Mr. Knadler had probably been suffering for several weeks, but when he was physically examined before going out for basket ball practice, he concealed the fact that he was not feeling very well.
One night during practice he became ill and Coach Mauer asked him if he had been eating too much. Knadler did not tell Coach Mauer that he felt very ill, but the next day while lunching, he confided to a friend:
"I just can't seem to get going. I haven't a bit of life in me." Shortly afterwards, he had to go to his home.
Knadler did not go out for the foot ball team this year but last season he was one of the Wildcat's main reliables in the backfield. On the freshman eleven the year before, he was quarterback, a position he sometimes played on the varsity in 1926.

Popular Student Succumbs After Week of Illness, Had Returned Home
Edwin Christian Knadler, a junior in the College of Commerce of the university, died at his home on Shawnee Terrace in Louisville last Tuesday night at 9:30 o'clock. His death came as a result of a case of influenza with which he had become infected and which caused him to return home a week before he died.
Edwin, more familiarly known as "Toots," entered the university in September following his graduation from duPont Manual Training school, where he was an outstanding athlete and where he won state-wide recognition for his ability as a basketball and football player.
During his freshman year at the university, Knadler won numerals in three sports: football, basketball and baseball. Last year he was awarded a letter in basketball, and was a substitute on the football team. Until a week before his death, he had practiced daily with the Wildcat candidates for this year's basketball team, and a berth on the varsity five had been practically assured him.
He was a member of Alpha Tau Omega social fraternity, president of Keys, honorary sophomore fraternity, and was recently pledged to Delta Sigma Pi honorary commerce fraternity.
Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Knadler, he is survived by four sisters.
Funeral services were held at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon in Louisville.
