NFL Official Vince Jacob Dies at 51
Vince Jacob, a National Football League official and retired basketball referee who worked more than 1,000 college games during a 23-year career, died of an apparent heart attack yesterday in West Chester, Chester County.
Mr. Jacob, 51, a special apparatus wireman for Western Electric, was transferred to its King of Prussia facility last month after the closing of the firm's plant here.
He and his wife, Heddy, had lived on Hilary Drive in Penn Hill's Shannon Heights section.
Mr. Jacob was an Eastern 8 Basketball League official but had worked numerous Duquesne and Pit games both before and since the inception of the league in 1976.
He was a high school football and basketball official in the WPIAL for about five years.
A fellow basketball referee, Glen "Dutch" Shample, said Mr. Jacob was "respected totally" by the players and his fellow officials.
He recalled an incident at a Pitt-Penn State game about five years ago in which the Lions had a comfortable lead with about 30 seconds to play.
"(Pitt Assistant Coach) Timmy Grgurich was chirping a lot toward the end of the game and Vince finally hit him with a technical. Timmy knew he had earned it and was asking me, kind of aside, why Vince hadn't hit him with it earlier."
"Just then Vince comes over and hits him with a second 'T'. Timmy said 'What's that for?' and Vince said. 'The first one was for what you said in this game. The second one was for all year long.'"
Upon retiring from basketball officiating in June, Mr. Jacob was honored with a testimonial by his fellow officials. He also received the Dave Fawcett Award of the Tri-State Basketball Officials Association for excellence in officiating.
Mr. Jacob was in his eighth year as an NFL official. He began as a line judge in 1975 and in 1978 was moved to side judge.
Mr. Jacob was a 1949 graduate of Central Catholic High School and an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Verona.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Carl V. of Midland Mich., and Lawrence A. of Dallas; his mother, Barbara Jacob; two sisters, Barbara Fritz of Virginia and Patricia Stawser of Bridgeville, and a brother, William of Penn Hills.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow and Friday at William F. Gross Funeral Home, 11735 Frankstown Road, Penn Hills.
Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Church, Verona, and burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Penn Hills.
