Tom Thorp, Noted Race Steward, Dies in Mass.
Miami sportmen, along with those throughout the nation, especially football and horse racing followers, Tuesday mourned the death of Tom Thorp in Cambridge, Mass., Monday, following a several weeks' illness, brought on by a heart attack.
Thorp, 60, for many years was ranked as one of the outstanding football officials in the country, dividing his time between that sport and writing horse racing for the New York Journal. In recent years he retired from grid officiating, and quit sports writing to become an official at various tracks.
One of Thorp's last football assignments was refereeing the pro game between the Washington Red Skins and Chicago Bears here in February, 1938. He also refereed the three previous Orange Bowl games.
Thorp has been a familiar figure around Miami race tracks since the sport first started here. He became a steward at Tropical Park when that track opened in 1931 and continued in that capacity every session. He also was steward at three New England tracks.
Thorp also was owner of a sporting goods store in New York City, managed by his brother.

Final Rites Set for Thursday
NEW YORK, July 7. - (INS) - Funeral services for Tom Thorp, one of the most versatile and well-liked figures in the world of football, baseball, and racing, who died Monday at Cambridge, Mass., will be held Thursday at his home in Rockville Center, N.Y. A requiem mass at 10 a.m. will follow at St. Agnes Church, Rockville Center.
Born and raised in New York's "Roaring Forties," Thorp was a noted reporter and sports writer for the New York Journal and American before he became one of the outstanding officials at leading horse racing tracks.
Successively all American football player, football coach and enormously popular referee, Thorp at the time of his death was presiding steward of all three of the New England horse race tracks and a Tropic Park, Miami. He had been on duty at Suffolk Downs until almost the very day he was stricken.
He played varsity football, baseball, basketball and water polo while attending Columbia and was captain of the 1904 football team when he was named all-American tackle.
