Hall of Famer Robert Nipper Had Been Star Athlete at Butler
Services for Butler University Hall of Fame member, Robert Linville Nipper, 90, Indianapolis, a retired teacher and coach who played on the school's 1924 national championship basketball team, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Crown Hill Cemetery Peace Chapel. Calling will be one hour before services.
He died Saturday.
an outstanding athlete at Arsenal Technical High School, Mr. Nipper participated in football, basketball and baseball at Butler. While there, he earned 12 varsity letters, a eat no one else is believed to have equaled.
In later years, he was inducted into the Indiana Basketball and Football halls of fame. He helped start the High School Football Jamboree program in Indiana around 1946.
After graduating from Butler in 1926, Mr. Nipper was hired as the university's freshman coach in football, basketball and baseball, a post he held for two years.
He then joined the faculty at Shortridge High School, where he taught history and coached football until entering the Navy during World War II.
After the war, he coached football at DePauw University for one year. He then returned to Shortridge as athletic director, and retired in 1969.
Mr. Nipper was a member of Second Presbyterian Church and the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.
He also served on various committees for the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame from 1960 to 1986.
He was the widower of Helena Sieloff Nipper.
