Ex-Official M.G. Volz Dead at 90
Nebraska basketball Hall of Fame member and longtime game official M.G. "Mutt" Volz died Monday morning after a long illness.
Volz, 90, lettered at Nebraska in 1923-25 in basketball and baseball and was elected as a charter member of the NU basketball Hall of Fame in 1989.
Upon graduation from Nebraska in 1925, Volz started a 37-year career as a football and basketball official and baseball umpire. He retired from officiating after the 1963 Orange Bowl.
After retiring as an official, Volz worked for the Big Eight as a supervisor of officials and was the television liaison for Nebraska's televised games for many years.
Volz worked for Alexander & Alexander Insurance in Lincoln after a long career as vice president for First Trust.
Volz is survived by wife Ethelyn, son Dr. Robert Volz of Tucson, Ariz., and four grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 2325 S. 24th St.
