Prof. Guy Lowman Dies in Madison
Former Phy-Ed Leader Long at U.W.
MADISON, Wis. - (AP) - Prof. Guy S. Lowman, 66, former chairman of the University of Wisconsin physical education department, died at his home Tuesday after a long illness.
Lowman, who came to the university in 1917 as an associate professor and director of the physical education department, coached basketball in 1918-1920 and coached the baseball teams from 1921 through 1931. He had a championship basketball team in 1918 and a championship baseball team in 1930. He was the university's head football scout for many years.
Lowman was granted a leave of absence before the 1942-43 school term began because of ill health and had not returned to his duties on a full-time basis.
He was born at Griswold, IA., May 12, 1877. He attended Iowa State normal school and receied a bachelor of physical education degree from Springfield, Mass., college of physical education in 1905.
Before coming here he held teaching positions at Brookline, Mass., high school, 1905-07; State Teacher College, Warrensburg, Mo., 1907-08; University of Missouri, 1908-10; University of Alabama, 1910-11; Kansas State agricultural college, 1911-16, and University of Indiana, 1916-17.
His widow and two daughters, Mrs. John E. Bula of New York City and Mrs. Karl Trump of Fayetteville, N.C., survive. Private funeral services will be held here Thursday. The body will be cremated and the ashes interred at the Lowman cemetery plot near Griswold.
