Rules Expert Irish Krieger Dies at Home
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Death yesterday claimed 64-year old E.C. (Irish) Krieger, nationally prominent as an interpreter of football rules.
Krieger, a Big Ten football and basketball official for 25 years, died of a heart attack in his home.
A native of Columbus who graduated from Ohio University in 1920, Krieger retired from active officiating in 1953.
Since then he had devoted almost full time to rules interpretation and supervision of Western Conference officials. Krieger wrote several books on the rules interpretation and mechanics of officiating.
He played football at Ohio University and later served on the coaching staff of that school and those at Tennessee and Bowling Green State University.
It was Krieger's interpretation of the complex football rule book that brought him prominence in the athletic field. he was a member of the NCAA's football rules committee and served as an advisor to several Ohio college and high school athletic associations.
Several times Krieger conducted officiating clinics for the armed services at the request of the State Department.
