William T. "Bill" Grieve, 83, an American League baseball umpire from 1938 to 1956, died Wednesday at Yonkers General Hospital after a brief illness.
Much of Mr. Grieve's life involved Westchester sports, and in 1968 he was elected to the Westchester County Sports Hall of Fame.
He umpired in the American League from 1938, through the glory years of such players as Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, until his retirement in 1956.
Born in Yonkers on April 25, 1896, Mr. Grieve also served in the state Assembly for a term in 1936. He was assistant director of the Yonkers Recreation Commission for seven years. His athletic career, before umpiring, was as a member of the Westchester Bantams Junior Basketball team that won 116 consecutive games; as coach of the Cook Post american Legion baseball team which won the 1926 Junior World Championship; and as a referee in the 1930 Eastern Collegiate Basketball League in Madison Square Garden.
Mr. Grieve was a member of the American Legion, Cook Post; Oldtimers Ballplayers Association of Milwaukee; and the Yonkers Oldtimers Sports Association. He was a parishioner of St. Denis Church and a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War I when he served with the "Lost Battalion."
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, the former Irene Corke; two sons, William Jr. of Ossining and Donald C. of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; a sister, Mrs. Jessie Green of Yonkers; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
