Albert F. (Ab) Hinshaw Dead
Albert F. (Ab) Hinshaw, 61, native Emporian and widely known sports official, died Thursday of a heart attack at his home, 5602 Park Ave., Kansas City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Newcomer Chapel, Brush Creek and the Paseo, Kansas City. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Mr. Hinshaw, born May 5th, 1901, was the son of Steven and Hannah Brickell Hinshaw and the grandson of Andrew and Sarah Ann Hiatt Hinshaw, Emporia pioneers. He was born on a farm east of Emporia and moved into Emporia with his parents about 1905 while his father was Lyon County sheriff.
He attended the Emporia public schools and was graduated from the College of Emporia in 1924. He was an outstanding athlete at the college and and later coached its basketball team from 1928 until 1931. Later he coached at Ellsworth and Salina high schools.
During World War II he left his job as district traffic agent for Mid-Continent Airlines, Inc., and served in the army air forces as priority officer at the Municipal Air Terminal in Kansas City.
After the war he became active again in sports, particularly in officiating Missouri Valley conference events. He retired from officiating in 1957 and has been teaching at Junction school in Kansas City, Kan.
Surviving are his wife, the former Marion Burr, also a former Emporian; a son, Albert, Duncan, Okla.; a daughter, Judith Ann Martin, Overland Park; a sister, Frances Fletcher, Los Angeles, calif.; a brother, Hainer Hinshaw, Birmingham, Mich., and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, George, david and Steven, and two sisters, Eleanor Ladd and Sarah.
Relatives living in Emporia include several cousins, E.E. and John Wood, Edwin Hinshaw and Mrs. L.L. Wright.
