Is Coach Knight Irrelevant?:
Coach Bobby Knight of Indiana lost 4 consecutive games played against Kentucky for the 1st time in the series history, as the Wildcats held on to a 75-72 victory in the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. UK was ranked #7 for this contest. With this win, Kentucky has defeated the last 10 Big 10 teams it has played (having defeated Indiana and Purdue in 1997; Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio State, Indiana, and Purdue in 1996-97; Indiana in 1994-95; and Ohio State in 1993-94 since their loss to Indiana that season). UK was led by Mohammed and Sheppard, each with 21 pts. For Sheppard, it tied his career high in scoring, and it established a new scoring record for Mohammed. Rob Turner's 25 pts was the Indiana guard's career high as well.
Indiana grabbed the initial lead, with a Patterson 3 starting things off, and eventually taking a 10-3 edge following a Rob Turner drive and 3. The Hoosiers started hot, making 6 of their 1st 6 FG attempts before Recker missed a 3. Mohammed had a putback of a Wayne Turner miss to make it 12-7 Indiana. Recker hit a 3, then Mohammed banked a 2 to make it 15-9. Nazr continued to work hard, making an 8 ft turnaround, and getting a steal which led to a Sheppard layup, cutting the margin to 15-13 Indiana. Smith passed inside for a Magloire layup to tie the score at 15-15 with 13 minutes remaining in the 1st half. IU went right back up on a Rob Turner tough layup, but an Evans 3 gave UK its 1st lead of the game at 18-17. A minute later, Turner hit Edwards will a toss about 1/2 the length of the court for a lob dunk to make it 20-20. Later an Edwards long 2 gave the Cats a 24-22 edge. Kentucky's heavy pressure defense, stronger than seen anytime previously this season, forced several Hoosier turnovers during inbounding or near midcourt. A Mills 3 made it UK 27-24. Indiana had their last lead after Gladness and Rob Turner layups, at 28-27. But another Mills 3 made it 30-28 UK. Cameron had 2 more 3s, to put the Cats up 36-30, before Guyton hit a 3 for IU. The Cats stayed ahead on the strength of a Padgett 16 footer, a Mohammed FT, and a Padgett putback of a Sheppard miss to make it 41-35 Kentucky. IU closed again, but the Cats stayed up following a superb drive and dunk from Jeff Sheppard, and Jeff also closed out the half with a 3 as time expired to give Kentucky a 46-39 lead at intermission. Bobby Knight was observed leaving the court, blasting #30 William Gladness.
IU started off the 2nd half strong, with a pair of Guyton 3s to close to 46-45, but Turner made a driving shot, and Sheppard hit a 15 footer and a 8 footer to make it 52-45. Padgett had a put back to add 2 more, before UK's defensive pressure rattled Indiana. Kentucky didn't score, but UK forced an IU turnover, and in a single possession had 3 attempts for a FG, dominating the offensive boards. Sheppard put back his own miss as he was fouled, but somehow the officials ruled that he wasn't in the act of shooting. Mandeville hit a 15 footer, but on the following possession he hit Edwards with an elbow for a foul. Sheppard nailed a 3 to make it 57-49. Mohammed got 3 chances to make 1 FT (which he did) after a lane violation. An Evans layup from a nice Turner pass made it 60-49 (UK's largest lead of the day). Mohammed made a soft bank shot, and later added a FT with about 10 minutes left to put the Cats up 65-55. Indiana did not quit, however, and Recker scored a pair of shots to close to 65-59. Mohammed showed that his recent free throw improvement was no fluke by making 2 of them, but Collier answered with a 14 footer. After Sheppard hit on a nice drive, Gladness put back a Guyton miss and it was 69-63. At the 5 minute mark, Padgett was hit on the right eye by an accidental Evans elbow during a rebound, and he was taken out for a while. Guyton hit a pair of FTs, and added 2 more to close to 70-67 with around 3 minutes left. The Hoosiers appeared buoyed by their crowd, but Mohammed stopped the tide with an inside turnaround shot to make it 72-67. Evans hit Sheppard with a lob pass to put Kentucky up 74-67. Guyton answered with a 15 footer, and inside 2 minutes left he hit a 3 to cut the lead to 74-72. Mohammed and Evans missed inside the final minute (Evans' shot was blocked),and IU had the chance to tie or go ahead on a 3. But Turner was fouled as Gladness threw up an airball hook shot, and Wayne hit 1 of 2 FT tosses. Again, with 6 seconds left, IU could tie with a 3, but Guyton launched a desperation shot with his foot on the line (it would have been interesting to see if the refs would have counted it as a 3) which missed, and the Cats survived with a 75-72 win.
