Cats Demolish Den of Destitute Dawgs:
After playing 3/4 of a good game, UK relaxed and let a 21 point lead slip to a 12 point win over Georgia, by a final margin of 83-71.
Georgia went up 2-0 and 4-2 early, but the Wildcats soon surged to a 13-4 lead with a smothering defense and some decent play by Sheppard, Prickett, and Pope. Soon the margin reached 18-8 with 10 minutes left in the half, and then 24-10 as Tony Delk scored on a 4 point play (a made basket, a missed FT and a putback basket) and had a steal which led to a Walker dunk. With only 3 minutes left in the half, the Wildcats led 31-16. Epps too played well, scoring inside and getting a putback basket even while surrounded by taller players down low. Scott Padgett entered late in the half and promptly hit a 3 and the final 2 points of the half on FTs. Kentucky led 38-24 at the half.
Rodrick Rhodes had been held scoreless n the 1st half, but he got 4 quick points early in the 2nd. With Pope hitting a 3 and Prickett scoring on a beautiful assist by Epps, the Cats pulled away at 49-29. The Cats would later lead 52-31 on a Rhodes 3. But Claxton, Anderson, and Davis combined to close to within 56-37. Kentucky pulled back to 60-40 on a dunk by Riddick and shots by Rhodes (with a little over 11 minutes remaining). With 8 minutes left, UK once again had a 21 point lead at 70-49. It even maintained a 20 point lead at 76-56 with 6 minutes remaining, on a Walker 3. Shots by Jones and Anderson, however, made the score 78-62, at which point Georgia scored the next 9 points to close to within 80-71. The Dogs even had the ball with a chance to close to within 6 or 7 points, had they been able to score. Fortunately, the Cats managed a Sheppard FT and an Epps lob pass to McCarty (Sheppard's FT ended a streak of 6 consecutive misses by the Cats). The final margin was 83-71.
