...to 92-77 Conquest
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Cornell beat Kentucky 92-77 here last night.
Really.
If you're shocked, or maybe just surprised, that's nothing compared to the way Adolph Rupp felt.
The UK basketball coach said he's seldom seen his team play a worse game, and he was being uncommonly kind at that.
It was maybe the biggest upset UK has ever suffered.
Cornell, after all, just plays for fun. The school belongs to the Ivy League, and the big sport is hockey, not basketball.
Morris Scores 37 Points
The school doesn't even award athletic scholarships.
"Cornell just lacks spirit about basketball," explained guard Gregg Morris. "We have better crowds on the road."
If all should change now, however, Morris will be a big reason.
The skinny 6-footer hit 16 of his 21 shots last night, most of them coming from distances that usually require radar. He scored 37 points.
And he can jump, too. His 11 rebounds sparked Cornell to a 45-35 margin on the boards, which was one big reason for the victory.
Where did an Ivy Leaguer learn to play like that?
"My father," Morris said. "He played with Sweetwater Clifton."
Morris' father played with the fabled old pro in Clifton's pre-Globetrotter days.
If Morris is the best Cornell player, maybe the best representative of the breed is Hank South. Although he had more than 100 college offers, which certainly can't be said of other Cornell men, he decided to pay his own way at Cornell because, like his playmates, he wanted a good education.
Didn't Need to Worry
"We play for fun," he said. "It's not a big business at Cornell. But don't think that takes away from our incentive."
He shouldn't have worried. Nobody in the crowd of 11,500 here last night thought that, least of all Rupp.
But while makng just slight reference to Cornell's well-executed control offense, its 57.9 shooting percentage and its defensive skill, the Baron dwelt long on UK's ineptness.
"We were just flat," Rupp said. "When we threw the ball away the first four times down the court in the second half, I said 'We're beat.'"
UK never led, although it did manage three ties in the second half.
After Morris' 21 first-half points shot Cornell into a 39-36 halftime lead, UK came back to tie at 45, 47 and 52.
Then Cornell broke open the game.
While UK ran its offense like a team of rookies, Cornell went on a shooting spree.
The winners outscored UK 27-9 after the last tie and that was all Cornell needed to hand UK its fourth loss in eight starts - all four of them at home. Cornell has a 5-2 won-lost record.
Nobody played well for UK, but Pat Riley did have 24 points and 12 rebounds. Guards Louie Dampier and Bob Tallent scored 18 points each.
There were a few boos late in the game, but most of the fans were silent. UK's new electronic message board tried to change the subject by flashing a weather report.
Incidentally, UK's all-time record against Ivy League teams - Princeton, Dartmouth, Columbia, Yale and Cornell - is now four victories and three defeats.
Really.
Cornell's Walter Esdaile rebounds the ball in front of Kentucky's Pat Riley (#42) and Jim LeMaster (#12). Others shown are Cornell's Hank South (#44) and Gabriel Durkac (#14)
