U.S. QUINTET ROUTS URUGUAY BY 63-28
Mexico, France and Brazil Also Reach Semi-Final Round in Title Basketball
Special to the Times
LONDON, Aug. 9 -- The United States Olympic Basketball team entered the semi-final round here today by handing the Uruguayan combination a resounding defeat, 63 to 28.
At the same time, Mexico advanced with a 43 to 32 victory over Korea. France outmaneuvered a game Chilean five in overtime by the narrow margin of 53 to 52 to take her place in the penultimate round and Brazil, by virtue of a 28 to 23 triumph over Czechoslovakia, completed the foursome that will fight for places in the final.
The most exciting match of the day was that between France and Chile. From the opening whistle, the rival quintets went at top speed with both sides depending less on clever dribbling and fast footwork than on long overhead passes and slam-bang operations under the baskets.
Ties at Final Bell
In fact, France was behind most of the way and tied the score as the final bell sounded. The French sank one free throw for the winning point during the five minutes extra time.
France is now the sole European challenger for the title. Neither Mexico nor Brazil displayed championship class and the United States quintet is strongly favored to take the world honors.
A touch of color and music enlivened the otherwise drab proceedings at Harringay Arena when Brazilian rooters broke into dancing and singing after their team's victory. The sound of squealing clarinets and the sight of husky Brazilians in a conga line down the aisles intrigued the sober Brattiest spectators.
Uruguayan Is Hurt
In a fast-moving match that saw one Uruguayan player collide with D.A. Barksdale of the United States team, necessitating the South American's removal on a stretcher, the United States five gradually wore down their opponents and won easily.
The North Americans' style, speed and stamina began to pay off early and near the end goals were dropping in the Uruguayan basket faster and faster.
Outstanding for the victors were R.A. Kurland, who scored 19 points; J.B. Renick, 10 points, and A.J. Groza, also with 10.
