U.S. FIVE DEFEATS PERUVIANS, 61-33
Wins fifth Straight to Reach Title Flight - Will Oppose Uruguay on Monday
LONDON, Aug 6 (AP) -- The United States basketball team rolled into the Olympic championship tournament today by defeating Peru, 61-33 , and immediately drew Uruguay as a first-round opponent.
The Americans and their southern neighbors are scheduled to square off at 4 P.M. (Eastern daylight time) Monday. The other game in this bracket sends Mexico against Korea, Brazil and Czechoslovakia are opponents in the first lower bracket game to be followed by Chile versus France.
The rangy, sharpshooting Yankees won five straight games to finish with a perfect record in the round-robin eliminations. Uruguay won three and lost two.
Marked by Politeness
The game with Peru was marked by politeness on both sides and the Americans, who in the past had been subject to frequent booing on the part of the fans, actually received some cheers.
Coach Omar (Bud) Browning, the United States head mentor, had given instructions to his boys to make this one especially clean, and his proteges responded. The gave one of the smoothest exhibitions of ball handling, minus bodily contact, seen in the tournament to date. Nobody fouled out.
The assistant coach, University of Kentucky's Adolph Rupp, said that he had told the athletes to "quit this rough and rugged stuff and get out there and play slick like you do at home."
Jones Paces Scorers
Wallace (Wah Wah) Jones, Kentucky guard, led the point making with a dozen counters. He was followed by Don Barksdale of the Oakland (Calif.) Bittners, who tallied ten, and Ken Rollins of Kentucky, who scored nine.
Louis Beck of the Phillips (Okla.) Oilers and Kentucky's Alex Groza flipped in eight each.
Browning used the college members of the squad in the first half and the A.A.U. men in the second. He said that he planned to employ this "unit" style in the tournament.
The Peruvians, hopelessly outclassed, played hard and the contest seemed to satisfy the hundreds gathered in Harringay Arena.
