Peru Last Foe of U.S. Cagers Before Elimination Contests
LONDON, Aug. 5 (UP) -- The United State's mighty basketball squad, allowed by the schedule to rest today after playing three games in three days, is assured of a place in the Olympic elimination tournament next week and is certain to play at least two more games in Harringay arena.
Most followers of the sport feel the Yankee hoopsters are practically sure to appear in four more contests, winning all and capturing the Olympic basketball championship.
Coming back after being given a 59-57 scare the day before by Argentina, the U.S. squad dealt a 66-28 licking Wednesday night to Egypt, clinching a place and at least one appearance in the elimination affair. Its next foe will be Peru, to be faced Friday in the final round of the preliminary round-robin tourney.
The U.S. and probably Argentina will qualify from Group C to each of the other sections for next week's elimination play-off.
Mexico of Group D, one of the two other outfits undefeated at the start of today's competition, clinched a berth for next week with a 68-27 walloping of Iran in today's first game, the Cabelleros' fourth straight triumph.
The U.S. representative displayed a finer brand of ball as they conquered Egypt without difficulty.
The starting team, composed of Kurland, Renick, Pitts, Robinson and Barksdale, scored promptly after the opening jump and forged into a lead of 21-7 before being relieved by a quintet composed of Boryla, Jones, Lumpp, Barker and Beard.
The latter combination, starting the second half with a margin of 32-10, was in turn relieved late in the game by the original U.S. team with the count standing 52-25. Barksdale had played in the second array in the second half in place of Boryla.
Bob Kurland (#90) grabs a rebound while Don Barksdale (#33) looks on
Ray Lumpp (#24) is guarded by Egypt's Abo (#40) and Moawad (#22)
