Roy McArthur Dies, Was Jackets' Coach
Georgia Tech's esteemed basketball mentor of the late 1940s and early 50s, is dead.
Roy McArthur died Wednesday a a local hospital. He was 58 years old.
Accredied with being among the forerunners of the present run-and-shoot brand of basketball, Mr. McArthur's Yellow Jacket cagers garnered Southeastern Conference runners-up honors in 1958. He assumed command of the squad in 1947 after serving an apprenticeship as B team coach.
Born Jan. 26, 1906, in Calhoun, McArthur graduated from Chattanooga (Tenn.) City High School in 1929. He came to Tech as a quarterback for the late coach Bill Alexander's football teams of 1930-31-32.
He starred in basketball during the same time.
Mr. McArthur left Tech in 1942 to serve in the coast artillery during the second World War. Upon his discharge in 1946, he came back home to The Flats.
At one time, he served as head football scout, but left Tech after the 1951 season to enter private business.
The funeral will be held in Chattanooga, Tenn.
