Ex-OSU Coach Bixler Dies
Paul O. Bixler, who was head football coach at Ohio State University for one year and later became personnel director for the Cleveland Browns, has died at age 77. Bixler suffered a heart attack Sunday afternoon in his home in the Cleveland suburb of Bainbridge Township as he listened to a radio broadcast of the Browns' game against the Buffalo Bills, according to his son, Dennis.
He was taken to the Cleveland Clinic, where he died Monday. Bixler was head coach of the Buckeyes in 1946 and began a four-year stint the next year as head football coach for Colgate. He was an assistant coach at the University of Pennsylvania in 1952 and 1953. Browns coach Paul Brown hired Bixler in 1954 as an end coach. He was an end coach and talent scout until 1960 when he became personnel director, a post he held until 1972. He stayed with the Browns as a scout until his retirement in 1977. Brown and Bixler became friends when Brown was coach at Massillon High School and Bixler was head basketball and assistant football coach at Canton McKinley High School.
