Maxwell Hannum Is Dead at 78
Maxwell E. Hannum, 78 (sic), the assistant to the president at Franklin and Marshall College from 1946 to 1954, died Sunday at his home at 1002 Hunter's Lane, Oreland.
While at Franklin and Marshall, Hannum served as public relations director and co-chaired the 1953 Red Cross Fund Drive. In 1948 he was elected president of the American College Public Relations Association. He also co-authored a guide to college publicity titled "The College Publicity Manul" during his stay in Lancaster.
He was born in Hockingsport, Ohio, and resided in the Pittsburgh area until his appointment at Franklin and Marshall. He fought for the American Expeditionary Forces in France in World War I and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1921.
After writing sports for the Pittsburgh Press from 1921 to 1930, he served as publicity director at Carnegie Tech until 1946. He was Carnegie's basketball coach from 1933 to 1946.
In 1954, he left the Lancaster area, becoming the education director of the eastern region of the National Association of Manufacturers.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Davis Price Hannum. They were married 27 years.
He is also survived by two sons, the Rev. Robert W. Hannum, Danvers, Mass; and M. Eugene, Lancaster; six grandchildren, and a brother, William of Oklahoma City, Okla.
