Former Rice Assistant Dies
HOUSTON (AP) - Joe Davis, a long-time Rice assistant coach under Jess Neely who helped the Owls win four Southwest Conference football titles, died Friday at a nursing home. He was 87.
Davis served as an assistant coach to Neely for nine years at Clemson and 27 years at Rice. He remained at Rice one season after Neely's retirement in 1967.
Davis also coached the Rice basketball team for six seasons when the Owls won or shared four SWC titles. Rice won the outright title in 1945 with a 20-1 record.
