Dr. Jesse Oliver Van Meter, Presbyterian Leader, Is Dead
Lexington, Ky., Feb. 19 - Dr. Jesse Oliver Van Meter, Presbyterian minister and educator, died here tonight.
Dr. Van Meter, 70, was president emeritus of Lees Junior College, Jackson, Ky.
He attended the University of South Carolina and the Columbia S.C., Presbyterian Theological Seminary.
He formerly served as physical director at the University of South Carolina and later directed the school's department of extension.
Dr. Van Meter was a former moderator of the Kentucky Synod of the Presbyterian Church, U.S. and at one time was minister of the Eau Claire Presbyterian Church in Columbia.
He was pastor of the Wilmore Ky., Presbyterian Church at the time of his death.
He was president of the Presbyterian-supported Lees Junior College from 1928 to 1948.

Death Takes J.O. Van Meter, Former Lees College Head
Dr. Jesse Oliver Van Meter, 70, pastor of the Wilmore Presbyterian Church and president emeritus of Lees Junior College in Jackson, died at 9:45 p.m. Friday at the Good Samaritan Hospital. He was admitted Feb. 10.
A native of Independence Mo., he was a son of the late William Scott and Anna Rebekah Farra Van Meter, and attended the University of South Carolina and the Columbia, S.C. Presbyterian Theological Seminary. Dr. Van Meter held a doctor of divinity degree.
He was physical director at the University of South Carolina and for a time directed the school's Department of Extension. Dr. Van Meter was a former pastor of the Eau Claire Presbyterian Church in Columbia, and formerly was moderator of the Synod of Kentucky of the Presbyterian Church, U.S.
Dr. Van meter became president of Lees Junior College in 1928. During his tenure at the Presbyterian-supported school, new equipment was obtained for the school, its endowment was increased to more than $100,000, its real property was increased, and with federal aid an athletic field was built.
His wife, the late Mrs. Frances Van Meter, was associated with him in his work for many years, and served the college in various capacities until her death in 1948. Dr. Van Meter became president emeritus of Lees on Dec. 31, 1948.
Dr. Van Meter is survived by a son, Lt. (jg) Jesse O. Van Meter Jr., Medical Corps, U.S. Naval Reserve, now on active duty and stationed at Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Miss Anna Rebekah Van Meter, Lexington; a brother, Dr. J. Farra Van Meter, Lexington; four sisters, Mrs. J.R. Alford, Miss Gladys Van Meter, Mrs. William Brown and Mrs. F.L. Draughon, all of Lexington, and two grandchildren, William Scott and David Martin Van Meter.
The body was taken to the W.R. Milward mortuary.
Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Estes Memorial Chapel, Wilmore, by the Rev. Thomas M. Johnston and the Rev. William V. Gardner. Burial will be in the Pisgah cemetery.
