Miami's Rider Dies at 88
OXFORD, Ohio (AP) - George L. Rider, for 39 years a coach and administrator at Miami University in Oxford, died Wednesday. He was 88.
Rider wen to Miami in 1917 to coach football, basketball and baseball. He was best known for his 36 years as coach of the Redskins' track and cross country teams. His cross country teams captured nine Mid-American Conference titles and 11 All-Ohio titles while his track teams won nine Buckeye Conference crowns and 10 consecutive MAC championships.
Rider was also Miami's athletic director for 16 years and its director of physical education for 26 years.
Some of his students went on to fame in collegiate and professional coaching. Among them were Paul Brown, Weeb Ewbank, Ara Parseghian, Bo Schembechler, John Pont and Walter Alston.
Rider is survived by his wife Una, a son and a daughter.
