"Monk" Simons Dies of Heart Attack
NEW ORLEANS, Nov. 5 (AP) - Claude (Monk) Simons, 56, Tulane University athletic official and beloved by a generation of Tulane football followers, died last night of a heart attack.
Father of Claude "little Monk" Simons, Tulane's head football coach, "Big Monk" had not been active as trainer during the past two years because of his health. He collapsed and died at the home of a friend.
Simons took an active part in sports since his youth and was known as a track star. He served as president of the Southern Amateur Athletic Association's boxing committee. He took special courses at Tulane and Harvard Universities.
He joined Tulane in 1920 and served at various times as coach of the track boxing, basketball and tennis teams.
