Obituary - Former Railroad Exec Dies, Birmingham (AL) News
Mr. Wurtele, 89, of 103 Hugh Circle, was a Louisville KY. native and was graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in Civil engineering.
After brief service with the Alton Railroad in Illinois and the Indiana Steel Co. in Gary, Ind., he joined U.S. Steel Corp. in Birmingham. He later served as general superintendent of transportation. In 1937, Mr. Wurtele was named vice president and director of the Birmingham Southern Railroad, a position he held until his retirement in 1952.
He was a member and deacon at Ensley Baptist Church, a past president of Ensley Rotary Club and a charter member of the Shades Valley Rotary Club. He was also a member of the Birmingham Transportation Club, the Alabama State Chamber of Commerce and Alpha Tau Omega. Mr. Wurtele was also a Mason.
GRAVESIDE SERVICES will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elmwood Cemetery, Valley Chapel directing.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ida Huey Wurtele, a daughter, Mrs. Leslie S. Wright and four sons, A. Fred, George R. and Henry Joseph Wurtele Jr., all of Birmingham, and John E. Wurtele, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
