Barkley J. Sturgill passed away on January 9, 2017 at his home in Prestonsburg. His family was with him when he passed. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Lewis Sturgill, and his children Patricia Hughes (Chuck) of Lexington, Dorothy Sutherland (Vaughn) of Memphis, TN, Sarah Sturgill O'Brien of Lexington and Barkley J. Sturgill, Jr. (Ellen) of St. Louis, MO. He is also survived by his sister, Winifred Sturgill Skaggs, of Lexington. He had eight grandchildren (Bart Barnette, Lewis Barnette (Tiffany), Allie Dodson (Davis), Austin Martin, Patrick O'Brien, Conor O'Brien, Catherine Sturgill and Will Sturgill.) He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy B. Sturgill and Dorothy Maggard Sturgill, his sister, Gwendolyn Sturgill Dingus and his brother, William B. Sturgill. The family is eternally grateful to his caretakers, Sherry Whitehead and Larry Blanton.
Mr. Sturgill was born on July 4, 1928 in Lackey, Kentucky. He graduated from Prestonsburg High School and attended the University of Kentucky where he graduated in 1949. While at UK, he played basketball with his brother Bill under legendary coach Adolph Rupp (one of only two sets of brothers to ever play basketball at UK at the same time) and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He attended law school at Washington and Lee University School of Law, graduating in 1952. After graduation from law school, he clerked for the Kentucky Court of Appeals and then returned to Prestonsburg to practice law. In 1957, he married Nancy Rita Lewis of Owensboro, KY, lovingly referred to throughout their marriage as "Miss. Lewis."
His initial law practice included a partnership with Bert T. Combs, with whom he carried a lasting close personal, professional and political relationship. In 1960, he served on the statewide leadership committee instrumental to the election of John F. Kennedy as President. Mr. Sturgill was heavily involved as an active member in local, state and national Jaycees as well as various community boards and organizations.
He served three terms as Floyd County Attorney where he was instrumental in civic and economic development. In 1972, he was appointed by Governor Wendell H. Ford to the Kentucky Public Service Commission and twice served as that body's chairman under both Governor Ford and Governor Julian Carroll.
Mr. Sturgill's distinguished career has included years of community service where he sat as a member of the Big Sandy Community and Technical College Board of Directors, the Eastern Kentucky Economic Development Commission, the Kentucky Crime Commission and the Big Sandy Area Development District Board of Directors. Most recently, he served on the executive board for Big Sandy Regional Industrial Development Authority.
Throughout his public life, he continued to maintain a private law practice in Prestonsburg, representing clients as a member of the Floyd County, Kentucky and American Bar Associations for almost 60 years.
