Obituary - Walter Wesley Morris Sr., Shawnee (OK) News Star (October 7, 1984)
Mr. Walter Wesley Morris Sr., 85, 317 N. Beard, died Saturday, Oct. 6, at a local nursing home.
Mr. Morris was born in Lexington, Kentucky on Feb. 1, 1899 where he attended elementary and high school. He graduated from the University of Kentucky with a B.S. Degree. In Sept. 1922, Mr. Morris was employed by Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co., Henryetta, in the oil and gas department as a draftsman. He was later promoted to field superintendent in charge of all production and drilling. He held this position for over 25 years.
In 1926, he married Miss Dolly Gay in Ada. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1976.
Mr. Morris moved his family to Shawnee on Feb. 1, 1948 in order to satisfy his desire for more active duties in the production field. He accepted the position of production superintendent for J.F. Smith, Independent Oil Producer. After Mr. Morris retired he continued to do consulting work for several years.
Interested in all sports, Mr. Morris, has been an active athlete himself. His sons Walter Morris Jr. played basketball and baseball for OU and Ron Morris played basketball at SMU.
Mr. Morris was also a member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists; Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and St. Paul's United Methodist Church where he served on the official board for many years. He was a 32nd degree Mason.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at Rosedale Cemetery in Ada. Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
The family has suggested contributions to the Memorial Fund of St. Paul's United Methodist Church as appropriate for memorials.
Survivors include his wife, Dolly, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter Wesley and Holly Morris, El Paso, Texas; and Ron Rutherford and Sandy Morris, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Morris, Lexington, Ky.; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
