Obituary - Death Claims Coach Miller, Lexington Herald (May 2, 1945)
Miller had been acting coach of all athletics at Morehead in the absence of Ellis Johnson, another former U.K. athlete now in the Naval Reserve. In addition to his other duties.
A native of Lexington, Coach Miller was a graduate of the old Lexington high school, and played on the basketball team of 1924 which went to the national tournament. He gained recognition at the University of Kentucky as one of the best quarterbacks in the south, and Harry Gamage, former head football coach at Kentucky, praised him as the smartest player he ever coached.
Miller played on the 1927 Wildcat eleven with such men as Elmer (Baldy) Gilb, present assistant U.K. coach; Paul Jenkins, coach at Louisville Male high; Ray Ellis, assistant coach at Georgia Tech, and Gayle Mohney, local attorney. He was unable to play much after that year because of a knee injury, but after being graduated in 1929 was added to the coaching staff. He remained at the University for that season only, but returned as an assistant grid mentor in 1932-33.
After quitting the Kentucky coaching staff in 1933, Miller went to Morehead as head of the athletic department there, and had remained there in that capacity ever since. His condition had been described as critical several weeks prior to his death.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Dale Smith Miller; a son, Michael and his father, Albert Miller of Lexington.
The body was taken to Morehead, and funeral services will be held at the college at 2 p.m. Thursday.
