Obituary - Hurst, Harold Mason, Lexington Herald-Leader (January 28, 2009)
Mr. Hurst was born on Sep 28, 1933 at Ezel, KY, the son of the late Samuel and Virginia Murphy Hurst. He was a member of the Stanton Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder, and the Stanton Masonic Lodge # 352 F&AM. He was a 1952 graduate of Powell County High School. He was a member of the Powell County Pirates Basketball Team where he excelled as an athlete. A 1956 graduate of The University of Kentucky, he played Basketball for Coach Adolph Rupp from 1952- 1956. He was a member of the only undefeated team (25-0) in 1954.
Upon his graduation he returned to Powell County and taught Vocational Agriculture from 1956-1971. During his tenure he worked with students of agriculture, and they received many state and national FFA awards.
Mr. Hurst served his community as both Mayor of Stanton from 1968-1972 and as a Powell County Magistrate from 1993 until his death. As a public servant he helped attain grants and assistance for numerous projects to better his community. From purchasing the first fire truck, to lighting streets, and blacktopping roads, to the construction of the County Detention Center, he was always working for the citizens of Powell County.
As a businessman, Mr. Hurst began his career as the owner of Hurst Insurance Agency. He later owned loan companies in Estill and Powell Counties and a convenience store. From 1970 to present he owned Hurst Furniture and Appliance in Stanton. He was also a real estate broker, appraiser and developer.
Survivors include his wife of fifty three wonderful years, Bertha Frazier Hurst; two daughters, Gwendolyn Hurst and Stephanie Wells-Hall, (Rick) both of Stanton; a sister, Betty Dudley (Andy) of Winchester; two granddaughters, Heather Wells Combs (Shannon) of Richmond, and Rebecca Wells of Stanton; one great-grandson, Robert Braeden Combs, a brother-in-law: Scott Frazier (Katherine); three sisters-in-law, Naomi Lackey, Mattie Frazier and Mary Helen Frazier; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by several family members including his son-in-law, Paul Wells and a nephew Sam Dudley.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11am Sat, Jan 31, 2009 at The Stanton Christian Church with Rev. Phillip Pogue, Rev. David Rule and Bro. David Bowden officiating. Burial will follow in the Stanton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-9pm Fri evening at the church. Pallbearers will be Tim Dudley, Steve Frazier, Bill Frazier, Greg Briscoe, Tom Logue, Bill Lackey, Mike Sheets and Brian Fields. Memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association, Hospice East, or the food bank of Stanton First Presbyterian Church.
