Phil "Cookie" Grawemeyer, a member of the University of Kentucky's undefeated 1953-54 men's basketball team, died of complications from lung cancer Thursday at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville. He was 73.
Mr. Grawemeyer, a 6-foot-7 forward who lettered in basketball at UK in 1954, 1955 and 1956, was UK's third-leading scorer in the 1954-55 season, averaging 13 points a game. He was the fifth-leading scorer in the 1955-56 season, with an average of 8.4 points.
The undefeated 1953-54 UK team did not go to the NCAA tournament that year. An NCAA rule banning post-graduate players from the tournament meant top UK players Cliff Hagan, Frank Ramsey and Lou Tsioropoulos could not play. UK Coach Adolph Rupp decided that the rest of the Wildcats would not play in the tournament.
"We were kids," Grawemeyer said in a 2004 interview. "We didn't have the maturity level Cliff and Frank and Lou had. We wanted to go ahead and play. It would have been nice to go, but I'm sure without those guys, we wouldn't have gone very far."
The UK team defeated LaSalle in the UK Invitational Tournament that season. LaSalle went on to win the NCAA tournament.
Mr. Grawemeyer also was a pitcher on the UK baseball team.
He was drafted by the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA and by professional baseball teams -- the Cleveland Indians and the St. Louis Cardinals. But he never played professional sports.
He was a member of the UK Hall of Fame, and his No. 44 basketball jersey is retired. Mr. Grawemeyer, a Louisville native, also played basketball and baseball at Louisville's DuPont Manual High School. He was a member of the Manual Hall of Fame.
Mr. Grawemeyer, who received a degree in business administration from UK, worked for the state highway department and was a real estate developer.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Lou Kaiser Grawemeyer; two daughters, Lynne Ann Wagner and Cathy Truax; a sister; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, Louisville. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorial gifts are suggested to the oncology unit or palliative care unit at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville.
