Obituary - Former Principal, Businessman Foust Dies, Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer (September 15, 1989) by Marty Payne
W. Wayne Foust, educator, businessman and community leader in Owensboro, died Wednesday at Mercy Hospital, after a short illness. Foust, 85, of 2050 Old Cabin Road, was the retired owner and operator of Green River Hatcheries and a former principal of Daviess County High School.
In 1927, two years after beginning work as a science teacher and basketball coach at DCHS, he was elected principal, a position he held until 1941, when he resigned to go into business on a full-time basis.
After his teaching and administrative career at DCHS, Foust devoted his time and energy to his business activities. He started Green River Hatchery in 1933 with one employee, and it later expanded with branch plants in Marion, Hopkinsville, Bowling Green and Madisonville, and in Tennessee and West Virginia.
When he was in high school, Foust and his father started Green River Poster Advertising Co., which operated outdoor poster boards in surrounding counties.
Foust was appointed to the Utilities Commission in March 1962. Foust resigned from the commission in August 1963 to run in the general election for mayor of Owensboro that year. He lost to Dugan Best.
William Carneal, making his first attempt for the city commission when Foust was making his mayoral bid, said he got to know Foust well. '
'I thought he was just a terrific person,'' Carneal said. ''He was the most honorable person you'd ever want to meet. Whatever he told you, you could put it in the bank.'' Foust was president of the Owensboro Rotary Club from 1947 to 1948. He was secretary of the club in 1938-39. He was a former member and director of the Owensboro Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the advisory board of the Salvation Army and worked with the local YMCA in an executive capacity.
Foust graduated from Owensboro High School and received a bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Kentucky. He did graduate work in education at UK and was a member of the basketball team.
During World War II, he was chairman of USO drives and participated in several war bond drives.
Foust was one of the first members and the first president of Friends of the Library, a library support group started about 10 years ago, according to Alice Gene Lewis, Owensboro-Daviess County Library librarian. Lewis said Foust was instrumental in developing fund-raising programs for the library such as aluminum can collection for recycling.
He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church and had worked in many capacities there for many years, including president and secretary/treasurer of the men's club, trustee and Sunday school teacher.
Foust was a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Kentucky Wesleyan College All American Club, a Kentucky Colonel and a former member of the Investigators Club.
