Obituary - Former Beaver Dam Bank Chief Marshall Barnes dead at 88, Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer (December 17, 1985) by Gary Karr
Marshall Barnes, former president of Beaver Dam Deposit Bank and former vice president of Owensboro National Bank, died Monday morning. He was 88.
Barnes was born in Beaver Dam in 1897 and was president of the Beaver Dam Deposit Bank from 1940 to 1981. He became president after the death of his brother, Frank, who had taken over the bank in 1934 after the death of their father, John Hiram Barnes, who helped found the bank in 1890.
Barnes was also politically active in Ohio County. He was a Democratic member of the state House of Representatives from 1932 to 1936, and he was clerk of the House from 1936 to 1938.
Patricia Furgason, Barnes' daughter, became president of the Beaver Dam Deposit Bank in 1981 after Barnes retired. Barnes' ill health in recent years kept him away from the business, Mrs. Furgason said.
Barnes had a reputation for wanting to be an innovator in the banking world. "His bank was always one of the first to launch something new, to get new equipment," said J.C. Riley, president of Citizens Bank in Hartford. "He was always innovative." Riley said he had known Barnes for about 45 years. "I grew up with him, I guess," he said. "We'll all miss him."
In interview in October, Mrs. Furgason said of her father, "He was one of the first persons in the ara to have put women on the board of directors. He promoted women within this bank."
Mrs. Furgason said her father was conservative, however, with financial affairs. The bank has tried to loosen up on some of its fiscal policies, though it still has a reputation for being a conservative bank, she said.
Ohio Judge-executive C.B. Embry Jr., who said he and his family were close friends with Barnes, said Barnes was "one of our county's most respected citizens. He was instrumental in the development of Beaver Dam and Ohio County in the past 50 years due to his support given to individuals through his financial institution," he said.
Embry said the fact that Barnes was a Democrat did not diminish the Embry's friendship with Barnes and his family. "My father was a state senator (in the 1940s) and they had tremendous respect for each other. They were close friends, as I and my mother are with his family." Embry said.

Marshall Barnes, 88, of 1A Quail Ridge Court, Owensboro, died Monday, Dec. 16. 1985, at his home. He was born in Ohio County, was a retired banker, and was a member of Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. He was president of Beaver Dam Deposit Bank from 1940 to 1981 and was also a former vice president of Owensboro National Bank. He served a 4-year term as a member of the state House of Representatives and had also been clerk of the House. His wife, Anne Barnes, died in 1982.
Survivors include a son, John Timothy Barnes of Louisville, a daughter, Patricia Barnes Furgason of Owensboro; and two grandchildren.
Services are at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Settle Memorial United Methodist Church. Burial in Sunnyside Cemetery, Beaver Dam. Visitation after 3 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at Glenn Funeral Home, and also from 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at the church. MARSHALL BARNES, AREA LEADER, DIES Beaver Dam Messenger (December 20, 1985)
Marshall Barnes, 88 of 1A Quail Ridge Court, Owensboro, died Monday December 16, 1985 at his home. He was born in Ohio County, son of the late John Hiram and Margaret Eblen Barnes. He was a retired banker, a member of the Settle Memorial Methodist Church and a 50 year member of the Beaver Dam Masonic Lodge #420 F& AM.
Mr. Barnes received his LL B degree from the University of Kentucky in 1924 and was admitted to the Kentucky Bar. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I and then entered the banking and insurance business with his father and brother. He wa president of Beaver Dam Deposit Bank from 1940 to 1981 and was also a former vice president of Owensboro National Bank. He served a 4-year term as a member of the state House of Representatives and had also been clerk of the House. He was formerly associated with Beaver Dam Mtg. and Supply Company, Royal Crown Bottling Company, John H. Barnes Insurance Agency and past President of KY Bankers Association.
