Cats blow out Flames
After an expected two-week break, Kentucky made up for lost time against Liberty. The Wildcats (2-1) jumped out to a quick 18-4 lead, and then used big nights from Patrick Patterson and Joe Crawford to win 80-54. The Cats forced Liberty (2-4) into just two-for-16 shooting early on, and the Flames shot 33 percent on the night.
Patterson notched his second straight double-double with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Crawford added a season-high 22 points off the bench.
"It was just fun after this long break to have fun on the court," said senior guard Ramel Bradley, who had 10 points, six assists and five rebounds.
Patterson's performance was one of the best by a UK freshman in recent years. His 23 points were the most by UK freshman since Randolph Morris put up 25 points against Campbell in 2004. Patterson also was the first to top 20 points and 10 rebounds since Jason Parker topped those marks against Southern California in the 2001 NCAA Tournament. Still, Gillispie expects even more from the forward.
"Instead of 23, I wanted him to have 37," Gillispie said. "We've got to do a better job of getting him the ball."
Gillispie did praise the improvement Crawford showed after a poor performance last time out. The senior guard had managed just four points in UK's loss to Gardner-Webb, but he responded with a solid game against the Flames. In addition to the 22 points, Crawford added seven rebounds and four assists Ñ more than he had in the first two games combined.
It was the Cats' first game without injured sophomore guard Jodie Meeks, and freshman forward A.J. Stewart made the most of his increased playing time. He finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
