Obituary - Cincinnati Enquirer (July 17, 1986)
William D. Rohr, Coached Miami Basketball to Victory
William D. Rohr, Miami University basketball coach from 1951-1957 who coached at Massillon High School under Paul Brown, died Tuesday at his Oxford, Ohio, home. He was 68.
"We don't have enough of these people around in the world," Brown, general manager of the Cincinnati Bengals, said Wednesday. "it's a loss. It's a real jolt to me and my family."
"He was a tremendous coach and, beyond that, a person. He was a straight arrow and had terrific ability as a teacher," Brown said. "He represented, as much as any person I know, the things I value."
"We went up to see him a few days ago but I had no idea it would happen this quickly," Brown said.
Brown, a Miami alumnus, said he assisted Mr. Rohr in his career and recommended him for the Miami University position because of his high regard for Mr. Rohr as a teacher, coach and person.
A Massillon native, Mr. Rohr graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1940 and began his coaching career under Brown prior to serving in the Air Force in World War II.
After the war, Mr. Rohr briefly returned to Massillon and then became head basketball coach at Portsmouth High School in 1946 where his teams posted an 82-29 record.
Mr. Rohr joined Miami in 1951 and, in six years as head basketball coach, his teams posted a 91-47 record and won Mid-American Conference championships, participating in three NCAA tournaments. His teams were the first from Miami to participate in the NCAA.
Mr. Rohr left Miami in 1957 to become head basketball coach at Northwestern University and in 1963 he became athletic director at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He retired in 1978 but held a position on the university's board of trustees.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen' a son, James, Oxford; two daughters, Mrs. Susan Wickham, Worthington, and Mrs. Julie Staehling, Cincinnati, and four grandchildren.
