Dr. Noll, Former Berea Physics Chairman, Dies
BEREA, Ky., - Dr. F.H. Waldermar Noll, 74, who retired as chairman of the Berea College Physics Department in 1961, died at 9:55 a.m. Wednesday at his home on Peach Bloom Hill after he suffered a heart attack.
Before coming to Berea in 1924, Dr. Noll taught at several colleges, and was a research participant in the Health-Physics Division of Oak Ridge (Tenn.) Math Laboratory.
The first recipient of the Charles F. Ketering Professorship, he also was the first president of the Berea Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi and was a member of the American Academy of Science and the American Association of Physics Teachers.
Dr. Noll is listed in "Who's Who in American Sports," "American Men of Science" and "Who's Who in America." He was a member and officer of the Berea Union Church and was a veteran of World War I.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nell Scovel Noll; two daughters, Mrs. Leonore Hoffman, Bloomington Ind., and Dr. Dolores Noll, Kent, Ohio; and four brothers, John V. Noll, Pipeston, Minn., Ervin E. Noll, Joliet, Ill., Gerhard B. Noll, Evanston, Ill., and Paul Noll, El Monte, Calif.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Berea Union Church by the Rev. Donald Johnson and Berea College. Deans, Dr. Louis Smith and Dr. Kenneth Thompson. Burial will be in the Berea Cemetery. The body is at the Wray Funeral Home here where friends may call at 3 p.m. today.
