In Death Scotty Remembers His Beloved WVU
MARIETTA, Ohio (UPI) - Floyd Scotty Hamilton brought honor to West Virginia University in 1942 by becoming its first All-American basketball player.
In death Hamilton, 54, also sought to remember his Alma Mater. The body of the athlete, who died at his home here Friday, is donated to the WVU Medical Center.
A memorial service also is planned.
An All-State basketball player at his native Grafton, W.Va., Hamilton led WVU to a National Invitational Tournament the same year he became an All-American.
Upon leaving WVU, he worked as athletic director and head football and basketball coach at Welch, WVa., High School from 1947-49.
During the next three years, Hamilton coached at Washington & Lee University, then accepted the dual position of coach and athletic director at Broadway, Va., High School.
In 1959, Hamilton became head football coach and guidance counselor at Marietta High, leading the Tiger football squad that year to an unbeaten record.
Three years later, Hamilton relinquished his duties for a leave of absence to become an assistant professor in Ibadan, Nigeria, serving in Ohio University's Overseas Project.
