Ex-Purdue Coach Ray Eddy Dies

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Former Purdue basketball coach and Columbus native Ray Eddy died Sept. 20 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital at Lafayette. He was 75.
Eddy, a 1929 graduate of Columbus High School and the brother of Morris Eddy of Columbus, started three years for the Bull Dog basketball teams that compiled a 63-15 record and twice advanced to the final 16 of the state tournament.
He went on to play on two Boilermaker Big Ten Championship teams and the mythical national championship team in 1932. He missed the 1932-33 season with an injury but came back to captain the team the next year. In his final year at Purdue, Eddy was named to the Big Ten all-conference team along with teammate and former Martinsville great John Wooden, who wen ton to coach at UCLA.
After graduating from Purdue, Eddy coach at Tell City High School and then Madison High School. At Madison, Eddy led the Cubs to state runner-up spots in 1941 and 1949, and won the state championship in 1950.
After the state championship, Eddy was named head coach at Purdue, where he compiled a record of 176-164 from 1951 to 1965. His 15-year stint as coach of the Boilermakers was second only to the 28 years posted by Ward "Piggy" Lambert.
Eddy's best season at Purdue were 16-6 in 1956, 16-7 in 1961 and 17-7 in 1962.
After stepping down as coach, he was an administrator in the Purdue athletic department until he retired in 1978.
Voted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 1972, he continued living in West Lafayette during his retirement.

Eddy was born April 13, 1911 in Columbus, son of Eli and Sophia Deaver Eddy. He married Dorothy Cassidy in Tell City in 1936 and she survives.
Surviving with the wife and brother are two daughters, Mary Martha Eddy of West Lafayette and Sarah Harnett of California; a son John R. Eddy of Anderson; a brother, Minor Eddy of Columbus, and five grandchildren.
