Dr. John T. O'Rourke, Ex-Dental Dean, Dies
Served at U.L. for 18 Years
Dr. John T. O'Rourke, former dean of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry, died yesterday morning at Portsmouth, N.H.
Dr. O'Rourke, 59, was director of graduate studies at Tufts Dental College, Boston. He suffered a heart attack a week ago.
He left Louisville in 1944 after 18 years as dean of the School of Dentistry here. He lived in New Castle, N.H., while teaching at Tufts.
Just after Dr. O'Rourke announced his resignation here, the university conferred on him an honorary doctor-of-science degree for his work in the development of the school.
Wrote Dental Book
He was the author of a book, Dental Education in the United States and for several years edited a national magazine on dentistry.
Dr. O'Rourke was born in Saco, ME. and came to Louisville to attend the Dental School. After his graduation in 1917, he remained to receive a bachelor-of-science degree. He became associate professor of the school, and in 1926 was named dean.
He had been president of the American Association of Dental Schools, and had served as consultant for Government agencies during World War II. He headed a board which selected dentists for the armed forces.

He was a member of the American College of Dentistry, New York Academy of Dentistry, International Association of Dental Research, Pan-American Dental Association, and the American Council on Education.
Dr. O'Rourke also was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi. He served on various committees of the American Dental Association and Kentucky State Dental Association.
His wife,, Mrs. Helen Cleaves O'Rourke, survives. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at Portsmouth.
