Grid Builder Metras Dies
NAPLES, Fla. (Gazette) - John Metras, the only Canadian university coach to be inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, died early yesterday of a heart attack at his winter home in Naples, Fla.
Metras, who turned 73 on April 8, had been associated with the University of Western Ontario as athletic director and football coach for nearly 50 years and at the time of his death was working on a fund-raising program to refurbish the Mustang's home field, J.W. Little Memorial Stadium.
Had officially retired
He had officially retired as athletic director in 1972. A national football award - the Johnny Metras Trophy - is presented each year by the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union to the outstanding lineman in Canadian college football. Metras was one of the first of the U.S. football important and - as was the case of with many others of those early tourists - he became a permanent resident of Canada for the remainder of his life.
He came from Detroit University to be a playing-coach for St. Michael's College, Toronto, in the old Ontario Rugby Football Union. He succeeded Bill Storens as head coach at Western in 1940.
