Joel G. Mason Dies
DETROIT - Joel G. Mason, a former basketball and golf coach at Wayne State and a former pro football player, has died. He was 83.
Mason, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease, died Tuesday, Wayne State spokesman Richard Thompson Jr. said.
Mason, of Grosse Pointe Farms, was a football standout at Western Michigan. He played professionally for the Chicago Cardinals and the Green Bay Packers. He also played professional basketball for the Sheboygan Redkins.
He began his 32-year career at Wayne State in 1946 as an assistant football coach. In 1948, he became the Tartars' basketball coach.
In 1955-56, Wayne State won 17 consecutive games under Mason, the winningest basketball coahc, in Wayne State history. He compiled a 186-173 record in 18 seasons.
