NYU Coach Remembered
DOBBS FERRY - Services are scheduled today for Howard Cann, the basketball coach at NYU during the team's glory years. Cann, a member of the basketball Hall of Fame, died Friday at the age of 97.
Cann was the coach for 35 years at NYU where he starred in basketball, football and track. He was the IC4A shotput champion in 1920, and competed in the Olympics that year, along with his brother, Ted - the first members of the same family ever chosen for the U.S. Olympic team.
As a basketball player, Cann led NYU to the 1920 national AAU championship. He coached the Violets from 1923 to 1958 and was named coach of the year in 1948. He sent a number of players to the pros, including Dolph Schayes, Don Forman, Ray Lumpp, Ralph Kaplowitz, Sid Tannenbaum, Tom Sanders and Cal Ramsey.
